Sergio Garcia To Take Part In 36-hole Shoot-out In Dallas In Bid To Claim Place At US Open

Sergio Garcia will head for US Open qualifying in Texas as he tries to avoid missing out on back-to-back majors for the first time since turning professional.

The Spaniard heads a list of 22 LIV Golf rebels, including former champion Graeme McDowell, who will tee it up in a 36-hole shoot-out in Dallas for coveted places at next month’s US Open in Los Angeles.

Garcia missed out on qualification for this week’s US PGA Championship, the first time he had failed to qualify for a major since 1999. The only other major he missed over the past 24 years — the 2020 Masters — was because he had Covid.

And now, after plummeting down the world rankings following his switch to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, he faces the prospect of missing two majors in a row. The 43-year-old’s best result in the US Open was a tie for third at Pinehurst in 2005.

Garcia is also almost certainly set to miss out on an 11th Ryder Cup this year after he resigned his membership of the DP World Tour earlier this month following sanctions handed out for playing in LIV Golf events last year.
