Manchester United stars Scott McTominay and Anthony Elanga came in for scathing reviews following their lacklustre displays against Charlton on Tuesday night, with fans calling for them to be moved on in the transfer market.

United may have cast aside the League One opposition 3-0 in the Carabao Cup tie at Old Trafford, but supporters were clearly displeased with the efforts of both McTominay and Elanga, who was deployed up front.

The Swede led a young United offensive unit against the Addicks with Erik ten Hag taking the opportunity to make several changes to the side that beat Everton 3-1 on Friday – with skipper Harry Maguire even making a rare start.

But fans were quick in taking to Twitter to make it known that they expect much more from the 20-year-old, who was replacing Anthony Martial at No 9.

One fan claimed that Elanga’s performances have only worsened since being introduced to the first-team, writing: ‘Elanga doesn’t have a future at United. He’s gone backwards since coming into first XI. Offers nothing.’

Another believed that the pair were of Championship-quality, adding: ‘McTominay and Elanga should sign for Stoke, they’re both horrible footballers.’

But a third argued the pair would struggle even in League One, claiming: ‘McTominay and Elanga looking awful and below league one standard against a league one side? Who’d ever have guessed?’

Forward Elanga appeared to struggle for the Red Devils at times against the League One side, failing to register a single shot on target or complete a dribble, failed to make any crosses and was caught offside on one occasion. It is now no goals in his last 30 appearances for United.

And McTominay did not fare much better, with no interceptions, blocks or clearances from defensive-midfield, and finished the game with his side’s lowest pass completion rate (80.7%).

For one fan, the display against the Addicks was enough to show that they were no longer required by the club – despite previous reports that the club would hold on to McTominay to retain strength in depth.

They wrote: ‘Elanga and McTominay gotta find a new club this summer I’m sorry but it’s the truth!’

And one supporter claimed that Tuesday’s opposition could provide a good fit for the Scottish midfielder, sating: ‘Elanga needs to go. He’s terrible. McTominay would blend in nicely in the Charlton midfield.’
