Boris Becker Warns Emma Raducanu’s Surgery On Both Wrists And Ankle Could Be ‘career Threatening’

Boris Becker has warned Emma Raducanu’s three recent surgeries could be ‘career threatening’ for the 20-year-old.

After bursting on to the scene with victory at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has struggled with injuries since and recently fell out of the top 100 rankings.

The Brit revealed earlier this month she will miss the French Open and Wimbledon this year as she undergoes surgery to resolve issues she has had with both wrists.

She has also had a minor operation on her left ankle, and recently posted a picture on social media that showed all three knocks bandaged up.

It is not yet known then the 20-year-old will return to Tennis, with some suggesting she could be back for the US Open later this year and others calming it will likely not be until 2024.

Raducanu said it ‘pained’ her to miss out on the summer but thanked fans for supporting her even when they ‘did not know the facts.’

Becker, who also broke through as a teenager and won his first of three Wimbledon titles aged just 17, has urged caution at the impact of having three operations at such an early point in Raducanu’s career.

‘The surgeries that she has had are, in my opinion, career-threatening,’ he told the Guardian.

‘Having surgery on your playing wrist, and as a two-handed player, the other wrist – and then on your ankle – is tough to bear for a young woman.’

On Raducanu’s failure to kick on after winning her first grand slam, Becker added: ‘I’m not in her inner circle so I don’t know all the things that went off, although I’ve seen the coaching changes.

‘But as a young woman, all of a sudden being on top of the mountain, you have to really dig in and find the resources and the team around you to guide you through the next 10 years.’

While Becker’s early career yielded more success than Raducanu’s has done so far, he did peak in his first five tennis-playing years.

Only three of his nine major victories came after the age of 22, despite his playing career stretching beyond his 33rd birthday.

The 55-year-old was speaking following his release from prison in December after serving a six month sentence for failing to declare £2.5 million worth of assets to avoid paying debts.
