Aymeric Laporte jokes he can ‘smell’ the Premier League trophy after Arsenal’s Brighton loss
Aymeric Laporte jokes he can ‘smell’ the Premier League trophy as he posts a meme of wrestling legend The Rock after Arsenal’s defeat against Brighton… before Man City defender insists ‘we still have to work for it’ despite being one win from the title
Aymeric Laporte joked he can ‘smell’ another Premier League win after Man City moved within one victory of the title.
Pep Guardiola’s side went four points clear by beating Everton 3-0 on Sunday, with the manager reminding the crowd they just needed two more wins to secure the title.
The equation became even simpler later on in the afternoon, as Brighton’s victory at Arsenal meant City can secure their first trophy of the season in their next game against Chelsea.
Laporte, who has already won four Premier Leagues with City, tweeted a meme of WWE legend the Rock saying he could ‘smell’ another trophy after the Arsenal result.
He remained grounded about the task in hand, though. After a fan suggested the title as ‘home already’, the 28-year-old replied: ‘Never, we still have to work for it.’

Pep Guardiola’s side are now one win away from the title after Arsenal lost to Brighton
Arsenal’s title race has come apart in the past few weeks, with City closing in after spending the majority of the season in second place.
Mikel Arteta’s men found themselves eight points clear at the start of April after seven wins in a row, but have won just twice in seven league games since then.
City, meanwhile, have won each of their last 11 in the league while also advancing to the latter stages of the FA Cup and Champions League in a season that could still see them win a famous treble.
Despite his side’s comfortable victory, Guardiola heaped praise on Everton after Sunday’s win.
Laporte reminded fans that City ‘still have to work’ for the title in their remaining games
He said: ‘I was really impressed the way Everton handled the game against Brighton (last Monday, winning 5-1). We handled the game they are so good at transitions. Every free-kick and corner, they are the best in the Premier League since Sean Dyche went in.
‘It is almost a goal every time. Arsenal lose here for one corner so it happens. We had the patience and momentum and we scored the goals in the right moment.
‘It’s so important and nice to celebrate with our fans. We need two more games. Hopefully (it will be the) next one against Chelsea.’
City will next be in action in the second leg of their Champions League semi final against Real Madrid on Wednesday, after drawing the first leg 1-1.
