Combat boots have been around since… forever. Beginning in the first century, people have worn a variation of what we have now. Introduced originally as shoes for — surprise, surprise — combat, the shoe morphed from a battlefield go-to into an adopted shoe of choice for the subculture set in the ’60s and ’70s.

Seen on everyone from rockers, punk music enthusiasts, gothic and alternative kids, combat boots have carried a reputation for their durability, performance and overall comfort. They’re an essential if you are a frequent concertgoer.

Pretty quickly, the fashion set caught on to the appeal of women’s combat boots, with Marc Jacobs leading the charge with his iconic Perry Ellis collection in 1992. Google “1990s style” and you’ll find about every celebrity — from Cameron Diaz, Cindy Crawford and Kurt Cobain in a pair.

Today, the shoe has become as ubiquitous as a clean white sneaker for women, an essential piece for any wardrobe. It’s easy to see why. Combat boots seem to carry an effortlessly cool flare, pairing well with everything from flowy dresses to cashmere sweaters. Women’s combat boots are also ideal for colder months as winter boots, as they often come with rubber and lug outsoles, perfect for battling a walk through icy city streets.

It is a trendy, gorgeous design. The next day I wore them for a full day of mall shopping and they were so comfy and didn’t hurt my bunions! I got the black to go with everything, but I might consider another pair. It would be a splurge though because they are pricey. But, well worth it! a must have! Stylish Combat Boot Trends for 2022

If you take a glance at the fall/winter 2022 collections, it is clear to see that this is going to be the season of the boot. Whether it’s an over the knee, Western style, or combat boot, this style of footwear dominated shows.

Tall, lace-up combat boots for women that evoke Peter Lindbergh’s iconic supermodel biker photoshoot were paired with graphic miniskirts at Monse. At Chloe, simple, understated women’s combat boots were worn with off-the-shoulder midi dresses, channeling Parisian cool, while at the Coach show, baby biker boots stormed the runway — a twist on the classic pair you may find aboard a Harley.

For the more daring fashionistas, take cues from the Junya Watanabe show. The brand’s stylish platform combat boots and leather pants created the illusion of mile-long legs.

What’s even cooler? The emergence of hybrid styles, with combat boots being the common denominator. You’ll see the best designer boots for 2022 include nods to other popular boot styles, taking details from the upper part of the boot and closures from Chelsea boot, motorcycle boot, or riding boots — it’s all with an emphasis on the tough-girl, thick lug sole.

How to Wear Combat Boots for Women

Whether you go full-out ’90s grunge or an all-black Y2K-inspired dystopian futuristic look, mix combat boots into your “weird girl aesthetic” vibe, or when you simply want to add an edge to a feminine look. Whatever your style may be, the combat boot can work seamlessly into your wardrobe.

Simply put, there are no rules, as long as it feels true to your personal style.

  • For a casual day, Kate Beckinsale’s graphic set hits the mark. Pair a matching outfit with cute platform combat boots and a tube top. Whether you want to channel a Y2K pop star or a K-Pop idol headed to the Seoul airport, this outfit checks both the casual and cozy boxes.
  • Looking to take things back to the ’90s? Take a page out of Jurnee Smollet’s Versace party look with a choker, a sleek ponytail, and a ruched coordinated set. Instantly, a seemingly sexy look becomes cool and sophisticated.
  • In a look that would make Lara Croft jealous, Kourtney Kardashian’s spin on the combat outfit is very Y2K-inspired. Wear a pair of baggy pants with a cropped cardigan or sweater or for extra edgy appeal, add layers and layers of chunky jewelry.
  • Want to keep things cozy with your stylish combat boots for women? Channel influencer Olivia Culpo this fall. Pair an oversized, fuzzy shearling coat with leather leggings. Want to go further? Add a matching shearling bag.
  • If you’re looking to put a modern spin on the ’90’s combat boots look, borrow inspiration from Paris Jackson. Style a chunky cardigan with a slinky minidress and cute combat boots for a grunge look that will take you from drinks to dancing with casual ease. Add a smokey eye for a true homage to the OG, Courtney Love.

What to Look for in the Most Comfortable Combat Boots for Women

In terms of function, women’s combat boots are ideal for cold weather because of their snug, lace-up design and rugged rubber soles — which, when made for walking on slick, icy terrain, make these great winter boots. Adding to their durability, most silhouettes are made with sturdy leather or suede and many include double-stitched details.

Not only that, combat boots are podiatrist-approved. “They’re great for people with chronic lateral ankle instability or for people that hike on uneven terrain,” explains Silicon Valley-based podiatrist Najwa Javed. But not all styles are created equal. According to Dr. Javed, “If the upper material is too stiff, like in an ice skating boot, you fall and it will cause a fracture because there is no give in the material.” On the other hand, “if the material is too soft, there is no support to control ankle motion,” she warns.

And if you have any of the following foot conditions, you should heed Dr. Javed’s advice:

  • Bunions: “A wide and open toe box is the key,” she says. “Boots can be narrow in the toe box, and that can cause pinching, which can worsen the pain of an existing bunion. Find a pair with a stretchable upper like suede or soft leather.”
  • Plantar Fasciitis: “Go for a raised heel,” she notes. “Having a heel counter or lift of at least one inch can significantly reduce heel pain. Wedged boots are also a great option.”
  • Flat Feet: “Boots that are made with anti-pronation technology are the best option, as well as boots that can accept insoles/orthotics,” Dr. Javed explains. “Flat feet are generally a more unstable foot type so opt for a rigid sole, arch support, and ankle length to help reduce the pronation that flat feet are known for.
  • Wide Feet: “For women with wide feet, using a men’s shoe in their size is the best option, given that most women’s boots are built narrower.”
  • High Arches: “Boots with lace-up designs can be better than those with a solid upper in accommodating higher arches or feet that swell,” she shares.
